We assist patients and families in the home with our long range goal being to create an inpatient residential facility for those who do not have adequate care in the home. Currently we provide psych/social support, nursing care and patient advocacy services. We bring in the services of physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech pathologists as well as spiritual and religious providers and some alternative care professionals. Palliative Care begins at the time of diagnosis or when services are needed and we work with patients who are continuing to seek curative treatment as well as those who have decided to stop treatment. There is no judgment. Palliative Care also assists people in deciding how to use the time they have in life affirming positive ways. We assist in working on living wills and decisions regarding legacies to leave behind for their loved ones. These legacies can be very creative, memory boxes, a mold of a mother's hand so that a child can always have that contact, videos, letters, songs etc. Palliative Carealso has a Doula Comfort and Care Program which provides trained volunteers who can provide care in the home as well. We were trained to train doulas by the Shira Ruskey Family Center in NYC who provide Doulas in the home as well as in some of New York's top hospitals. Palliative Care is a very intensive program which serves those in need of support in very effective ways, medically driven but supported by community efforts.
